Peer-Reviewed Mechanism

Habituation is the failure mode no one has solved.

Storms et al. (2022), Journal of the Royal Society Interface: an autonomous, behaviorally varying predator robot produced zero detected habituation across a multi-week field trial. Static and propane-cannon controls habituated within 3–5 days (Cummings 1995).

Varia's algorithmic pattern variation is built on this finding. Patrol paths, speeds, and approach angles change continuously, denying the flock the behavioral predictability required for habituation.
